Why We Partner with Businesses Close to Home

At Gaalswyk Holdings, geography isn't a filter—it's a philosophy.
When most acquisition firms talk about due diligence, they mean spreadsheets and conference calls. When we talk about it, we mean showing up.
Respect and trust aren't built over a Zoom call. They're earned on the shop floor, in the break room, and in honest conversations with the people who've poured their lives into building something worth owning. That's the kind of partner we set out to be from day one—and it's why geography sits at the center of everything we do.
In this short video, Co-Founder Chris Gaalswyk shares why geography is central to how Gaalswyk Holdings operates, and what it really means to partner with a business close to home. Give it a watch, then read on.
Why Proximity Matters
Gaalswyk Holdings focuses on branded manufacturers and industrial automation companies—hands-on businesses run by people who care deeply about their teams, their customers, and their communities. These aren't businesses you can manage from a distance. They require presence, attention, and genuine relationships at every level of the organization.
That's why we prioritize investing within 200 miles of Mankato, Minn. Not because we have to, but because it makes us better partners. Being nearby means we can show up in person when it matters, build real relationships with the people doing the work, understand the day-to-day realities of the business—not just the quarterly numbers—and be a trusted partner rather than a distant owner making decisions from afar.
The difference between a good acquisition and a great one often comes down to that last point. Founders who've spent decades building a business aren't just looking for a buyer. They're looking for someone who will carry it forward with the same care and commitment they brought to it. Proximity is how we demonstrate that commitment—consistently and in person.
Community Isn't a Talking Point
The local communities we invest in aren't backdrops to our strategy. They're home. We live here, work here, and have deep roots in the same industries and towns where these businesses operate. That shared context means we understand the language of manufacturing and family business in a way that can't be faked—because we've lived it.
We take seriously the responsibility that comes with acquiring a business someone else built. Their employees, customers, and community reputation are now in our hands. Staying close is one of the most meaningful ways we honor that responsibility.
The Way They Were Built
We believe businesses are best supported the same way they were built: by people who are present, invested, and accountable to the community around them. That's not a geographic limitation—it's an advantage.
If you're a founder thinking about the next chapter for your business, or a business advisor looking to understand how we operate, we'd love to start the conversation close to home.
